?Pillars for excellence in leadership

By Gerald Mohlabe,www.goaldrivenconsulting.com?

It?is known in civil engineering that every structure of lofty buildings needs strong 2011 all star jersey pillars that can provide a strong and an unshakable support for the building to stand even in stormy weather.

This principle applies to leadership.

Let us go through 11 pillars for excellence in leadership:

1. Self-knowledge

Excellent leaders are people who know themselves. They know their strengths, their weaknesses, their limitations, their talents, their skills, their dreams and they know their values. They make decisions based on their values.

Self-knowledge is a powerful tool that enables great leaders to know what to correct, what to improve, what to maintain, what to develop and it also enables them to know what to learn.

2. Relationships

Good leaders know how valuable and important relationships are. They take time building good relations with their people. They know that people are the most important resource that one can have and cherish.

Good relations with people build trust. Trust is the glue that holds good leaders and their people together. Excellent leaders have a fundamental knowledge and understanding of people. This is the reason why their leadership is so excellent.

you need to treat your people as the most important asset you have in your organization. Treat them with respect and dignity. Make efforts to build good relations with your people. Good relationships make high morale possible.

3. Character

Character is the moral strength to behave in accordance with proper values and morals. The former US General, Norman H. Schwarzkof said, "Nineteen nine percent of leadership failures are character failures." 2011 all star jersey People cannot enjoy following a leader whose character is dubious and flawed.

Excellent leaders have a strong character. They know that character development and leadership development are inseparable twins. Excellence in leadership is not possible if character gets neglected.

If you want to experience excellence in leadership, you need to develop your character now. If you fail in the area of character, you fail in leadership. That is it, nothing more, nothing less.

4. Positive attitude

Attitude determines either success or failure in leadership. Attitude should never be underestimated in leadership. Former Prime minister 2011 all star jersey of England Winston Churchill said, "Attitude is a little thing that makes the big difference."

If you are like most new entrepreneurs, you will 2009 all star red jersey most certainly make many mistakes in the process of building a successful business. You are human…and you will falter. Be ready to humble yourself, accept that you will fumble and fall, learn from your failures, pick yourself up, brush the dirt off your back, and continue to look in the only direction that will bring you success...Forward.

"Failure is the tuition you pay for success" ~ Walter Brunell

In the last 4 years I have surrounded myself with many successful small business owners. I have taken notes, asked questions, investigated their tactics, picked their brain, silently watched 2009 all star red jersey and have done everything humanly possible to follow in their footsteps. In the process I have discovered the key ingredients of creating a business that can, and will survive in any economy…online or offline.

Putting People First

Putting your needs aside and putting people first is the foundation of any successful business. Building concrete relationships with your customers will create trust. Once your customer trusts you, they will refer you to others, buy your products and continue using your services. Without trust and customer loyalty..businesses don't have a fighting chance.

In my landscaping business, I thank customers for their referrals with a gift card to the local supermarket or shopping center. I may be out $25 to $50 for the time being…but without that referral from my existing customer, I would not have made an 2009 all star red jersey extra $500-$1000 on a new landscaping project, by gaining a new customer.

Leadership starts with tough decisions.? Let me share with you my recent leadership challenge and the leadership secrets you can use in any team building situation for great leadership results.

I have the honor and pleasure of volunteering for many groups and causes.? In many situations, I am called upon to lead as chairperson or co-chairperson.? Recently, justin verlander embroidered blue jersey I had the honor of co-chairing an event that involved leading and motivating a team of volunteers to work together for a successful result.? Overall, the team volunteers are leaders in health care, education, business, media, the arts, and faith-based organizations, etc.? In other words, this team of volunteers consisted of very motivated and accomplished people who wanted to make a difference.

One committee member became increasingly negative in her communication and actions at the expense of the other committee members.? She behaved in a manner that was not in line with our overall mission.? After a coaching session agreeing on what was expected from her in relationship to our mission, her behavior became increasingly worse.? The final straw was a very negative e-mail that stated she was the only committee member who was doing anything and personally attacked the other committee members.

After consulting with the event organizers to gain agreement on a plan of justin verlander embroidered blue jersey action, I called this person to let her know that this was not acceptable behavior and invited her to meet with me to discuss how we could bring her behavior more in line with the mission of our project.? She rejected my invite, and I let her know that by not excepting my invite, she was no longer a participant in our event.? I followed up with an e-mail and letter reiterating my verbal statement.? She made the justin verlander embroidered blue jersey choice to “fire herself.”

As leader of the event, I made telephone calls to committee members to explain the committee change, let each committee member know the wonderful job they were doing, and shared with them where we were in relationship to our mission and goals.? While making these calls, I soon found out that some committee members were not as involved in the project because of the one negative committee member.?? Some members had stopped attending meetings, stopped communicating, and weren’t giving 100% for the event.? After assuring them that they were valuable team members of the project and that this “negative member” would not be involved in the project’s going forward, we experienced a new level of motivation and participation that took our event to a new level of success and broke a record for attendance.

I recently heard a manager state that he didn't care that his employees liked him. Instead, he wanted them to respect him. Based on what I know about this situation, the employees neither like him nor respect him. In essence, he had what is known as position power, and nothing else. The employees did the assigned work only because this manager had the authority to make matters difficult for them.

Managers must work hard to create a fair playing field. I agree that being liked is much less important than being respected, but having others appreciate who we are is a justin verlander embroidered jersey critical component to effective management. When making decisions, we need to consider how the employees will accept them. In other words, a top-down decision-making process is counterproductive to leading a workforce.

Here are 10 signs that demonstrate your employees don't respect you:

1.???? The employees attend only mandatory meetings. Of those "mandatory" meetings, they will look for excuses to miss some them, such as a "pressing deadline."

2.???? When you talk, they fail to maintain eye contact. If during a meeting, they are doodling or intensely immersed justin verlander embroidered jersey in their justin verlander embroidered jersey Blackberry or iPad.

3.???? The employees exhaust sick days and vacation time, even when a deliverable is urgent. The more time they are away from work, the more likely they are interviewing for positions external to the organization.

Imagine this scenario: The brilliant Gen Y you hired less than a year ago has come into your office to say that he is leaving the company. He explains that he's just not getting what he needs in this job. You are shocked. You gave him plenty of time to get his feet wet and assured him that he will have a shot at a management position in "no time". Co-workers have shared how they worked their way up into present positions with many years of company verlander blue jersey loyalty, and occasional long work days. But, there verlander blue jersey was no reason for him verlander blue jersey to feel stress or pressure on the job. His work schedule is as good as yours and anyone else in the company. What went wrong? You are disappointed and conclude that he is feeling entitled and had unrealistic expectations.

Sound familiar? This is a common event in today's generational workplace, particularly with Generation Y. Thirty percent are anticipated to have an average of seven jobs while in their 20s. They move around from job to job for two primary reasons:

・ They see insecurity in the job market and must assemble skills for their career development.

・ They often run up against obstacles in the workplace that block their chance to grow those skills.
